Every child deserves a bedtime story. That's why BAREFOOT BOOKS became one of several ORGANIZATIONS to donate to FIRST BOOK. First Book provides new books to children from low-income families in communities across the United States and Canada. Did you know that.... 1. More than 80% of preschool and after-school programs have no age-appropriate books for the children they serve. 2. Up to one-third of American children enter kindergarten lacking at least some of the skills needed for a successful learning experience. 3. 54% of 4th graders eligible for school lunch program, a poverty indicator, scored in the "Below Basic" reading proficiency level. First Book provides new books to children in need, addressing one of the most important factors affecting literacy - access to books. Since 1992, First Book has provided an ongoing supply of new books to children participating in community-based programs. For the local heroes serving children in libraries, soup kitchens, Title I schools, preschool and after-school programs and housing projects, First Book is a life-changing resource - enabling them to integrate high-quality, age-appropriate books and educational resources into their curriculum. Please join me in my effort to raise $1,000 for this wonderful organization.
